Store Story: Kernersville

Whit’s Frozen Custard. The first time we heard those words, like everyone else in town, we asked “what’s frozen custard?” After the first taste, we didn’t care what was in it...we were hooked. From the first taste of that fabulously fresh product, those three words became household favorites. We were amazed at the variety of toppings that could create any flavor we wanted, and our favorite changed every time we tried the flavor of the week. But our love for Whit’s went beyond the yummy taste.

In Granville, Ohio, we were fortunate to live down the street from the very first Whit’s location. Not only was it the first place we thought of when we wanted dessert, it became a local destination.

Every celebration from birthdays to good report cards to entertaining guests (“Wait ‘til you try Whit’s!”) warranted a trip there.

It was where we went after school activities. It was the first place each of my kids went the first time they were allowed to ride bikes into the village sans parents. It was also the first place fundraisers went looking for donations. Gift cards were expected in Easter baskets every year in anticipation of multiple visits for a summer scoop. Or a float made with soda in glass bottles. It was where the best memories were made. And it was why, after moving from Ohio to North Carolina, I left a lucrative nursing career and opened a Whit’s.

Finding the perfect vacant storefront on our first trek through Kernersville (and greatly missing Whit’s fresh taste) solidified the decision to bring the deliciousness of  Whit’s Frozen Custard to the Piedmont Triad. Emulating the Whit’s in Granville, creating the rare mom and pop shop experience offering a fresh product made on site and excellent customer service was the goal. We’re lucky to be able to serve “smiles in a cup” to our terrific community...and help make memories of their own.
